Clay Aiken – A Fantastic Performance

In 1967, the Gibb Brothers released their first album in England.  Named Bee Gee’s 1st, the album had 14 tracks.  One of the most popular tracks on the album was #10.  It was called To Love Somebody and it became a huge hit for the group.

In May of 2003, Clay Aiken sang To Love Somebody as part of the Top 4 Show of season 2 of American Idol.  All the American Idol judges, including Robin Gibb who was a guest judge for the evening, immediately praised Clay’s fantastic performance of the song. The live audience gave Clay a standing ovation for his performance.

That evening was one of the few times that I agreed with Simon Cowell’s comments about Clay’s performances.  That night, Cowell said:

Clay, I think this is the third Pop Idol or American Idol I’ve done if you include the English one, and that’s probably one of the best performances I’ve ever heard throughout the competition.

I would love to hear Clay sing this song again.  I think it really fits his vocal range and it certainly brought out strong emotions in Clay’s performance.

Were you watching Clay on American Idol when he sang this song?  Is it one of your favorites too?

  1. Clay was so great with To Love Somebody. It was one of his best of the season. But then…I can't choose one that wasn't his best, lol! 🙂

  2. Yes, I was watching that night, and YES, I'd love it Clay would record this song.

  3. I was definitely watching AI2 when Clay was on… Clay's tone, just everything about his voice is wonderful. The range…the power.. Once you've heard Clay sing, there is just no going back. I try to listen to others, but there is no one out there that is music to my ears… He's got me for life. It was nice watching the video again… The other thing is, is that Clay can sing any genre'. He is so unique that way.

  4. This is one of my most favorite Clay Aiken songs…..he sang it with so much passion and control. I was "toast" after this performance.

Thank you for posting this. It is a very special song to me.

  5. Yes and Yes to your two questions. This is my number one favorite song of the BeeGees.

I just want to thank you for this newsletter. This is a wonderful service you do for all the Clay fans. I hope you never get tired of doing it.

  6. To Love Somebody — and that somebody we ended up loving was/is Clay. Great voice, great stage presence, and undeniable charisma. Another unforgettable performance in addition to all his others. Enjoyed watching the video again and again. Thanks for including it with the blog.

  9. I missed this the first time around, but found it online later and now have it on a DVD and in my iPod. Love, love, love it. And I also loved the judges' comments–especially Simon's.
    Nobody sings like Clay Aiken.

  10. My answer to both questions is YES ! I watched the night he sang it and have played the video
ever so many times. It is one of my favorites and loved everything about it, especially the way Clay
looks into the camera at the end, which felt he was looking straight into my eyes, heart, and soul.
Loved the comments everyone including Simon, gave to him and just added to my pride and love
for Clay!!! I agree with others – MusicFan123 – I really appreciate what you do here – Thankyou!
