by Lynn Bonner
U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers, a Republican representing the 2nd Congressional District, and Democratic challenger Clay Aiken will debate on Oct. 6 in Pinehurst.
The N.C. Bankers Association is sponsoring the debate, to be held during its management team conference. WRAL’s David Crabtree will moderate. The hour-long debate will be taped and broadcast at 7 p.m. on WRAL and at 11 p.m. on WRAZ.
“We believe this highly anticipated, first televised debate between these two candidates will have much of our state watching very closely,” said Thad Woodard, president and CEO of the N.C. Bankers Association, said in a statement.
Aiken, a former American Idol contestant and long-shot candidate running in a conservative district, won a close primary this spring to challenge Ellmers, a two-term incumbent from Dunn. The sprawling district includes all or parts of nine counties, including Wake, Alamance, Chatham, and Moore.

USATODAY – POLITICS: Clay Aiken, Rep. Ellmers to face off in televised debate
by Catalina Camia
We know Clay Aiken can sing, but can the former American Idol runner-up also debate?
GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers and Aiken, the Democratic nominee in North Carolina’s 2nd District, will face off in an Oct. 6 debate that will air on WRAL-TV. The CBS affiliate in Raleigh will tape the debate at a conference hosted by the North Carolina Bankers Association.
“We believe this highly anticipated, first televised debate between these two candidates will have much of our state watching very closely,” Thad Woodard, president and CEO of the bankers association, said in a statement.
Aiken is trying to unseat Ellmers, a two-term congressman, in a conservative district that includes the Raleigh suburbs and central and eastern parts of the state. Ellmers won a second term in 2012 by 14 points, doing slightly better than GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney who carried the district that year.

You can do it Clay, I'm rooting for you, I'm in CA so I can't vote for you, but I would if I could. Good Luck………..
I am positive that Clay is a good debater! By the same token, I am not so sure about Renee Elmers. Hopefully NC Dist #2 will see the light & see that Clay is a candidate for the people, Republican or Democrat, & will do his best for them.
