The American Music Awards have lasted for 42 years. They even survived the death in 2012 of their creator, Dick Clark. Clark had a simple idea: focus on the genres with the broadest appeal and leave classical, jazz, and other specialized forms to the Grammys.

But none of them won.The winner was the sixth nominee, Clay Aiken. Which shows just how hot Aiken and the American Idol franchise were at the time.
