Clay Aiken – 5 Days and Counting

By musicfan123 · Comments 9587(5)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F05%2F26%2Fclay-aiken-5-days-and-counting%2FClay+Aiken+-+5+Days+and+Counting2010-05-26+08%3A12%3A46musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D9587

You could hear the buzz all over the internet on Tuesday.  And for Clay Aiken fans, Speculation 101 was the lesson of the day!

On Tuesday morning, pictures turned up of Clay as he arrived at LAX.  Both TMZ and JustJared posted a relaxed Clay as he made his way through the airport.  For fans, seeing  Quiana  as his travel buddy made for more speculation and conversations.  Did Clay travel to LA to perform somewhere?  Will he be on American Idol, or is he there to record for AOL?  Or is it something we don’t know anything about?   Well, hopefully, new information will show up today.

As the fans wait for more facts, it was wonderful to read the newest review on Tried and True by Pink Armchair.   As a employee of the PBS station in Chicago, Pink Armchair was able to hear the Cd and wrote the following about the CD.

Well, I don’t know if it will make anyone feel better, but right now, listening to probably the most gorgeous album my ears have ever been treated to in my entire life (and that’s saying something for someone who is a musician and works for a classical radio station), I seem to be incapable of worrying about Clay or this album. By next week, I hope you’ll all feel the same way.

At this moment, I think I’ve fallen in love with Dave Novik. The VOX is front and center, each of the arrangements helps to tell the story of the song without getting in Clay’s way, and such obvious care and love and passion has gone into this thing — I just can’t feel anything but gratitude that Clay and Decca found each other. That’s the truth, and you know I’m not the mushy type.

I’ve said this before, but I think Decca is looking more toward longevity for this album than a quick splashy blitz. A lot of little viral things as opposed to a week or so of Clay being plastered everywhere in the usual places and then, poof! he’s gone. And I just think an album of this type is marketed very differently than a pop album or a rock album.

No, I’m not worried. I can’t get the grin off my face, as a matter of fact. After seven years, this guy is still killing me dead. More than ever, actually.

ETA: Okay, you want details? All righty.

Unchained Melody, Moon River, and Crying are three of the most exquisite things I’ve ever heard. (The blend with Linda Eder is unreal, and so much emotion! And Vince Gill’s guitar work on Moon River is such an incredible asset to the song.) There’s an undercurrent in Unchained Melody (arranged by Ben Cohn, BTW) that is very poignant because of what the percussionist is doing — I’ll be interested to see if anyone else picks up on it. I don’t want to spoil it by saying what I think it is, but it’s very different.

Every one of these songs has its own distinctive personality and tells its own story, and I think the Billboard reviewer’s description of Clay’s “swagger” is dead on. He just sounds so happy — so comfortable and easy and at home singing these songs. Mack the Knife has such an assurance about it…and such a vicious glee. He sounds like he’s having the time of his life.

Misty and It’s Impossible (two songs I’ve never cared for, till now) are almost hypnotic. The only word to describe It’s Only Make Believe is…cheeky. There’s a Kind of Hush has a real joy behind it. And Clay somehow makes all of these songs sound as if they’re the first time anyone has sung them. And I guess that’s what a great artist does.

There were moments during Clay’s tours when I would suddenly choke up at something he did vocally. My throat would close and I would find myself crying (maybe some of you can relate). That has happened quite a few times while listening to this album. I think a lot of what I feel is happiness for him.

Thank you, Pink Armchair for sharing the excitement with all of us.

Did you have a chance to hear the snippets of the songs on Tried and True that are on the Decca site?  Be sure and click on them.  The quality is the best ever.

Each day, there seems to be new things that are presented to the world about Clay Aiken, his new album or the tour.  It makes the days go quickly and the boards buzzing with excitement

On Thursday, there was some news that is interesting and important.

  1. A notice to all fans at the Official Fan Club was posted today.  They wanted all the members to be aware that the Clay teams was working on the new website.  Because of this, a few sections would be temporarily removed.  For move details visit: FANCLUB
  2. Book and music seller, Barnes and Noble listed Tried and True on their site.  They have both the regular CD and the Deluxe Edition.  But the best part of the B&N entry is the new snippets of the songs.  Some are different than the ones we have been given before.  Have you listened yet?  You can reach the snippets by clicking  HERE
  3. There is a new poll at Billboard.com.  Some fans are interested in voting for Clay in American Idol Polls.  I always like to see Clay do well in polls, but I wonder why they allow people to vote over and over.  The fans that can “spam” the fastest win.    For more information on this poll and the following one visit the site before May 19th.  Click on BILLBOARD
  4. Aaron Sorkin is a renowned writer in the fields of plays, movies and television.  He wrote a very interesting article about Newsweek’s drama critic, Ramin Setoodeh.  Setoodeh caused a huge stir when he wrote that gay actors couldn’t play straight roles.  Sorkin had a different twist on the topic.  You can read the article at  SORKIN

What wonderful bits of news will we get today?  Whatever it is, it will be exciting and help Clay fans get through the weekend.

Clay Aiken – Universal and Decca are Leading The Way

By musicfan123 · Comments 8836(6)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F03%2F24%2Fclay-aiken-universal-and-decca-are-leading-the-way%2FClay+Aiken+-+Universal+and+Decca+are+Leading+The+Way2010-03-24+07%3A25%3A01musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D8836
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Since Clay Aiken signed with Decca Records, a part of the Universal Music Group, I have been interested in how they approach the ever-changing music recording business.  It seem that UMG, the largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry, is not afraid to try new and innovative ways to be the leader in the recording industry.

Universal Music Group recently unveiled a plan to test CD sales at $10 or less per unit. It’s a price that music fans have been demanding for years. Naming the program “Velocity,” UMG hopes that consumers will go out and buy CDs.

CD sales have fallen off in recent years while digital downloads have seen significant growth. The music site, Ars Technica projects that digital music sales will pass that of CDs by mid-to-late 2010.

Universal Music Group is taking steps to bolster their flagging CD sales. They are reducing the price per album, so that consumers will be spending anywhere between six and 10 dollars — a figure that is more competitive with digital services like iTunes.

The decision is a gamble for UMG: the price change lowers the company’s profit margin by shifting the wholesale price from $10.35 to about $7.50. Rolling Stone reports UMG is betting on increased sales volume to make the change profitable.

Jim Urie, Universal Music Group Distribution Chairman/CEO said:

“We think it will really bring new life into the physical format.”

The response to this new plan is mixed.  There are many people who are excited to see lower physical CD prices.  Lee Simmons from the internet site, Bizmology says that since it costs just pennies to manufacture a single CD, it is about time to see the lower price.

For some reason, the other major labels seem hesitant to try the new pricing.  Simmons states that some of the label execs are even annoyed with the idea.  However, they have not come up with another idea for stopping the decline in CD sales.

Will the lower price of a physical album entice consumers to purchase? It worked for retailer Trans World Entertainment, which saw sales jump 100 percent during a $9.99 test plan that partnered with Sony, UMG and EMI. With music sales already down 15.4 percent from just last year, success for UMG could signal a broader change from the other major labels

According to an industry observer at Billboard:

“The definition of idiocy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Things are not going to get better for CD sales unless the price point is addressed. One thing that the Trans World test shows for sure, $10 will drive sales and traffic.”

If the price of CDs is lowered by all the labels, I might be visiting the CD section of stores more often.  It is such a good feeling to walk out of the store with a brand new CD in your hands.  It feels good to slip it into the console of the car and listen as you drive home.  Now, if they can only come up with an easier way to open the CD case!!

Clay Aiken – Reuters News

By musicfan123 · Comments 5862(16)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F08%2F10%2Fclay-aiken-reuters-news%2FClay+Aiken+-+Reuters+News2009-08-10+07%3A07%3A38musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5862
Monday, August 10th, 2009

Do you know a recording artist named Fabolous?  Well, he made some news this week and it was a mixed blessing for him.

According to Keith Caulfield, who writes for Billboard and Reuters, the New York rapper topped the latest Billboard 200 album chart after selling 99,000 copies of his new release “Loso’s Way”. His previous album sold 159,000 copies in 2007.

Sadly, the latest sales period marked just the second July week when not one current album sold at least 100,000 copies. Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991 and supplied the numbers.

Caulfield feels that the poor numbers will continue this week.  The predicted leader for the week is the country group Sugarland who released a Wal-Mart exclusive.

While Sugarland will be at the top, the numbers will be low.  If Sugarland sells less than 100,000 copies, it will be the first time that has happened in any August.

What does this mean to the recording industry?  Is this slump a sign of the financial depression or is it a sign that people are not buying music albums?  You can be sure that the “suits” at the music labels are trying to find the answers.  Their livelihood is a stake.

OK…….Clay Aiken……where does he fit in this discussion?  For me, I see two things to think about.  First, it reminds me of how well Clay has sold CD’s.  Even without radio play or complete label support, he has sold millions of CDs.  And secondly, it is a good reminder to all of us to relax and let Clay tell us about his future plans when he is ready.  With everything in such turmoil, I believe he is making sure he is doing the correct thing to secure his professional career.

Clay Aiken – SoundScan Excitement or Disappointment

By musicfan123 · Comments 1389(22)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F06%2F05%2Fsoundscan-excitement-or-disappointment%2FClay+Aiken+-+SoundScan+Excitement+or+Disappointment2009-06-05+14%3A23%3A49musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D1389
Friday, June 5th, 2009

March 1, 1991 was the beginning of something different in the world of music sales.  Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales data of music throughout the United States.

Nielsen SoundScan is an information system that tracks sales of music and music video products throughout the United States and Canada. Sales data from point-of-sale cash registers is collected weekly from over 14,000 retail, mass merchant and non-traditional (on-line stores, venues, etc.) outlets. Weekly data is compiled and made available every Wednesday.

SoundScan is the official sales source for the Billboard music charts.  Before 1991, Billboard tracked sales by calling stores all over the U.S. and asking about sales.  This method was inaccurate and could be manipulated easily by both the stores and the record companies.

Is SoundScan completely accurate today?  Well, as with any rating system, it is watched carefully and most experts feel it is as accurate as possible. The biggest problem seems to be that not all stores  subscribe to the reporting system. This means that any sales from that source will not be counted.

As a business, Nielsen SoundScan has many clients including all major and most independent labels, distribution companies, artist managers, and booking mangers.   Online retailers, concert promoters and venue owners also use Nielsen to help in their business decisions.

As fans of Clay Aiken, the weekly SoundScan numbers have been interesting to follow.  They fill you with excitement or bring disappointment.  Whether Clay is on the Top 200 list or not, most of the Clay Aiken fan boards list the weekly SoundScan numbers.  Be sure to check them out to see the trends in the music industry.

Most Clay Aiken fans are looking forward to watching for Clay to be active on the SoundScan reports in the near future.

Clay Aiken Sings Billboard #1 Hits

By musicfan123 · Comments 3539(10)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F04%2F07%2Fclay-aiken-sings-billboard-1-hits%2FClay+Aiken+Sings+Billboard+%231+Hits2009-04-08+07%3A17%3A45musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D3539
Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Billboard #1 Hits was the theme for American Idol, Season 2′s top 8 show.  The show was aired on April 8, 2003 and each singer had the opportunity to sing a song that had been a #1 hit on the Billboard List.

Ryan Seacrest started the night by introducing the judges and added little tidbits about their history relating to number 1 songs — Randy Jackson produced eight number one songs while Paula Abdul had six number one singles. And Simon Cowell – well, according to Ryan, Simon thinks he’s number 1. The guest judge for the night was Lionel Richie.

Lionel said he was a fan of the show, and was looking forward to the opportunity to help out a little. He also stated that he thought that Simon was a bit out of control.  Ryan introduced a short film clip that showed highlights of Lionel’s musical career.

The eight contestants sang the following songs:

1. Clay Aiken- “AT This Moment” (Billy Vera & the Beaters)
2. Kimberley Locke-”My Heart Will Go On” (Celine Dion)
3. Ricky Smith- “Endless Love” (Lionel Richie and Diana Ross)
4. Kimberly Caldwell -”Everything I Do, I Do It For You” (Bryan Adams)
5. Josh Gracin- “Amazed” (Lonestar)
6. Carmen Rasmusen- “Call Me” (Blondie)
7. Trenyce-”Power of Love” (Celine Dion)
8. Ruben Studdard- “Kiss and Say Goodbye” (The Manhattans)

Clay’s performance of “At This Moment” was excellent, but brought interesting remarks from the judges.  Randy didn’t like the song choice, but in a turn of events Simon said: “Well, this show proves that Randy Jackson hasn’t got a clue what he’s talking about…because that song was perfect for you…absolutely on-the-money!  Well done.”

Kimberley Locke and Ricky Smith both received OK comments from the judges for their performances.  According to the judges, they were fine but didn’t blow them away.

The eight Idols all participated in a commercial for Nokia phones during this program. They showed Clay sending Ruben a text message that says 919 beats 205.  They also showed Carmen sending a kiss to Clay and him sending one back.

Following the commercial, Kimberly Caldwell was not supported by the judges. They all thought she picked the wrong song for her singing style.  However, the judges were excited about Josh Gracin’s performance and Simon said, “…one of the few artists tonight that picked the right song….well done.”

Carmen and Trenyce were not favorites of the judges for their performances this night.  Simon thought they should both be in the bottom three and all of the judges were disappointed in their song choice.

The last performance of the evening was Ruben Studdard who sang “Kiss and Say Goodbye.”  All of the judges thought it was the performance of the season and suggested that Ruben could teach a master class on performing.

The following night, the results show started with a group performance of Lionel Richie’s song, “All Night Long.”

Kelly Clarkson was a guest on the show and sang her hit, “Miss Independent.”  She was backed by her own dancers and tried to do a bit of dancing during the performance.

The Idol’s participated in a Ford commercial, singing “Get Out Of My Dreams, Get Into My Car.”

After the commercial break, the bottom three singers are announced and they were Kimberley Locke, Kimberly Caldwell and Ricky Smith. The eliminated Idol was Ricky Smith.

It was an interesting week and the Idols seemed to be very busy with lots to do.

The following is a video of Clay’s performance.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
