Monday, October 3rd, 2011

If you are a fan of music, you have probably heard the name David Foster. If you are a fan of Clay Aiken, you probably know that Clay and David and friends, colleagues and family.  David Foster has built an incredible musical career over the last 40 years.  However, even with all his success, David is still busy, helping young musicians, writing music and touring all over the world.

This month, David will be touring throughout Asia.  Titled David Foster and Friends Asian Tour 2011, the concerts will feature Michael Bolton, Phillip Bailey, Charice, and Russell Watson.  The 9 – concert tour will visit five countries in Asia.

When David returns to North America, he is scheduled to perform at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on November 25, 2011 and December 29, 2011.

Foster prides himself in his ability to put together musicians who he feels can help and support each other.  A few years ago, Foster hosted a PBS party at his home.  He introduced world-renowned pianist Jeffrey Biegel to Neil Sedaka.  Sedaka was working on a piano concerto and after meeting at Foster’s home, the two worked together to enhance the composition.

After many long hours of work, Biegel performed the original composition last September 12th.  The piece, titled Manhattan Intermezzo, was a hit and Biegel said that each time he plays the composition it “touches my heart.”  Another great musical collaboration made possible by David Foster.

On June 17, 2011, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Walk of Fame committee announced the new Walk of Fame Honorees for 2012.  David Foster was selected to receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Selected for his contributions to the recording industry, David will join others, including Vince Gill, Hal David and Barry White as they see their star unveiled next year!  Congratulations, David.  You certainly deserve this honor.

What else is in the future for David Foster?  Well, last July, The Hollywood Reporter announced that David was named the new chief at Verve Music Group.  According to THR:

Foster’s arrival at Verve Music Group, which includes imprints GRP and Impulse (home to John Coltrane’s catalog), is part of Universal Music Group chairman and CEO Lucian Grainge’s plan to reinvest in UMG’s creative resources. Under Foster, Verve is expected to shift its focus to adult contemporary pop, or “what David does best, from Groban on down,” says a source. The label’s roster includes Herbie Hancock, Diana Krall and Ledisi. It also has released albums by Queen Latifah, American Idol alum Katharine McPhee and Treme regular Trombone Shorty……..Foster’s sister Jaymes is also expected to join the creative team.

I really hope that this information is correct.  It sounds wonderful…however; I am having trouble finding sources to collaborate the article from The Hollywood Reporter. I spent almost an hour on Google last night and I found nothing…nil…nada… There is no mention on Fosters official website, on the Verve Music Group website or Universal Music Group.  It has been over 2 months.   I hope we get official confirmation soon.  If any of you have more information, I would love to see it.

David Foster is one of the most commercially successful producers and composers in all of popular music. He has a lot to be proud of in his life.  One can only hope that he will continue to find new talent, produce and write many more hits.

Someone just sent me another source for the Verve mention:

Robin Leach :  The Las Vegas Sun

“In between his three new Las Vegas shows, David will play various Asian cities for three weeks with his traveling company. But for the first time in his career, he’s got two months where he has no plans whatsoever to produce or record. After a near-lifelong producer commitment at Capitol, he’s now free until his first day at Universal on Dec. 1.”

In a press release on Thursday, November 4, 2010, NBC announced the talent lineup for the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting.  The holiday tree lighting will broadcast live on NBC, on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 8:00 – 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The 13th Annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center special will feature performances by many celebrity musicians. The star-studded performance will include:

  • Susan Boyle from Britain’s Got Talent
  • Mariah Carey, a top recording artist
  • Charice, the teen sensation from the Philippines
  • Sheryl Crow, the Grammy winning singer
  • Jackie Evancho, the 10 year old soprano from America’s Got Talent
  • Josh Groban, from Los Angeles
  • Katherine Jenkins, a Welch singer
  • Kylie Minogue from Australia

The Radio City Rockettes will also be featured in the extravaganza.  Natalie Morales and Al Roker will host the show.

For many, the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is the kick off to the holiday season.  Many families, friends, and individuals make it a point to attend the lighting ceremony every year.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a worldwide symbol of the holidays in New York City. The tree, traditionally a Norway Spruce, is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire, and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star. Tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and hundreds of millions watch the Tree Lighting Ceremony broadcast live across the globe.

This year’s tree is a very respectable 74-foot high and 40 foot in diameter!  The tree lighting ceremony is free and no tickets are needed.  However it is advised you arrive early to secure a prime viewing spot for the 2-hour lighting ceremony.

I know that each of the musicians who will be participating in this program are wonderful, however, I would much rather see and hear Clay Aiken.  Nobody sings Christmas songs better than Clay.  Maybe he will get a return visit in 2011.

On November 30, 2004, Clay Aiken was part of the star-studded hour-long special on NBC celebrating the lighting the world’s most famous tree.

Co-hosts for the evening were Al Roker and Nancy O’Dell.  Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Hughes skated to Vanessa Williams who sang “Silver and Gold.”

Besides Clay, the musical lineup for the special included performances by Hilary Duff, Kenny Chesney, Tony Bennett, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey, Chris Isaak, Michael Buble, Vanessa Williams, and The Radio City Rockettes. Chicago was the special house band for national telecasts.

Clay was dressed for cold weather in an overcoat, striped scarf and a black hat.  Clay sang “Winter Wonderland” during the National broadcast, and “Hark the Herald Angels Sing/O Come All Ye Faithful” during the earlier hour broadcast that was only shown in New York.

The following are some videos of the 2004 performances by Clay.  It looks like so much fun!

ET Online has a video of some backstage activities from Saturday night.  It is nice to see David Foster talk about all the talented musicians that joined him for his show, “David Foster and Friends,” held at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas.

A highlight of the video is an interview of Clay Aiken with Donny Osmond.  Take a look.  It is fun.

Clay Aiken – A Highlight of the Show

By musicfan123 · Comments 4304(20)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F05%2F11%2Fclay-aiken-a-highlight-of-the-show%2FClay+Aiken+-+A+Highlight+of+the+Show2009-05-11+07%3A12%3A57musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D4304

Las Vegas, Nevada is a city unlike any other in the world.  It is a city where you can visit, Paris, Venice, New York, Mandalay Bay, New Orleans and Egypt……all within a few miles of each other.

Las Vegas is also a city where there is so much talent that one could go to a different show or event almost every night and never repeat.  Top entertainers perform for years in the city and others come for only a few weeks,  Then there are the stars that come in for only one night and bring a unique and fabulous show to the city.  Last Saturday, “David Foster and Friends” was one of those special one-night experiences.

David Foster brought together one of the most unique and talented group of entertainers one could find anywhere.  The talent spanned many different, unique styles and each was one of the best in their field.

David is like the “energizer bunny”.  He is full of more energy than most people.  Once the program started, he was involved with each act and was constantly adding his own wit and information to the show.  The show lasted 3 hours and David was “on’ the entire time.

A few highlights of the evening were surprises to many of the audience.  Heather Headley was wonderful in her rendition of “Unbreak My Heart” and she brought so much to the finale of the evening.

The audience was introduced to the talent of two dancers from the United Kingdom who showed a remarkable talent that combined dance skills and comedy.

Brian McKnight is a wonderful talent, but including his two boys in one of his songs made for a great family experience.

It was fun to see Paul Anka and Donny Osmond sing “Puppy Love” together and, of course, the visit by Cher made the audience break into applause.

The young Filipino singer, Charice, is like a firecracker.  She obviously loves to perform and seemed at ease during her set towards the end of the concert.  The audience was filled with Charice fans of all ages.  The Filipino community is proud and supportive of this new, young star.

For me, the highlight of the evening was seeing and hearing Clay Aiken back on the stage, doing what he does best……singing.  Performing a Peter Cetera Medley, Clay sounded wonderful and looked comfortable and handsome.  The audience gave Clay a great deal of support and a standing ovation.

An interesting side event of this performance was documented on Amazon on Sunday.  Clay’s rankings of sales of his album, “On My Way Here,” rose from 22,155 to 2,523 in 24 hours.  That’s pretty good for an album that is a year old.

Overall, “David Foster and Friends” was an amazing concert.  If you have the chance, don’t hesitate to attend if it ever comes close to you.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
