Clay Aiken – Visual Arts Mesh With Music

One of the highly anticipated new music albums for 2010 will feature Clay Aiken.  The multi-platinum recording star recently left RCA and signed with Decca/Universal.  Decca has the reputation of working with outstanding musicians and emphasizing the music as the most important part of the recording process.

Information about the new album has been scarce. Most of the “facts” about the recording have been passed along through unreliable tweets, facebook pages and   speculation.

In October, Clay said that the album would be out in the first part of 2010.

Because of the secrecy surrounding this album, the general public has no idea where Clay is in the steps of putting the album together.  I would like to think that the team is working on the album cover.

The first impression of a CD is generally based on its cover.  The cover design acts like the cover of a magazine.  It is always the first thing a buyer observes.  For that reason, the cover and packaging of a CD is an integral part of the CD process.

Visual arts mesh well with music and many album covers have become a marketing tool.  There are certain album covers that we recognize immediately……..Everyone remembers the cover of “The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, or perhaps Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon.”  These two album’s artwork has become memorable almost on its own.

Alex Steinweiss invented the album cover as we know it, and created a new graphic art form.  Steinweiss won a scholarship to Parsons School of Design and at the age of 23, he became the first art director at Columbia Records.

In 1940, he pitched an idea: Why not replace the standard plain brown wrapper with an eye-catching illustration?  The company took a chance, and within months its record sales increased by over 800 per cent.

His covers for Columbia combining bold typography with modern, elegant illustrations took the industry by storm and revolutionized the way records were sold.

In 1950, Steinweiss started a 20+ year association with Decca recordings.

Steinweiss

Over three decades, Steinweiss made thousands of original artworks for classical, jazz, and popular record covers for Columbia, Decca, London, and Everest; as well as logos, labels, advertising material, even his own typeface, the Steinweiss Scrawl.

He launched the golden age of album cover design and influenced generations of designers to follow.

As photography started taking over album design, Steinweiss slowly began to take on less and less work.  He felt out of his comfort zone and felt that photography “cheapened the medium.”

Steinweiss now resides in Sarasota, Florida and at 92 still holds exhibitions of his artwork.

Of his work on the albums, Steinweiss said:

“I love music so much, and I had such ambition.  I wanted people to look at the artwork and hear the music”

What do you think?  Will Clay’s album cover be unique?  Will it have special artwork on the cover or will it be made up of photography that makes a splash?  Whatever it is, I hope we see it soon.

The Decca Decade Has Arrived!

It is 2010 and now we know that news will come

SOON!!

While we wait……lets celebrate New Years!!

Did you know??

The most commonly sung song for English-speakers on New Year’s eve, “Auld Lang Syne” is an old Scottish song that was first published by the poet Robert Burns in the 1796 edition of the book, Scots Musical Museum. Burns transcribed it (and made some refinements to the lyrics) after he heard it sung by an old man from the Ayrshire area of Scotland, Burns’s homeland.

It is often said that “Auld Lang Syne” is one of the most popular songs that nobody knows the lyrics to. “Auld Lang Syne”  translates as “old long since” and means “times gone by.” The song asks whether old friends and times will be forgotten and promises to remember people of the past with fondness, “For auld lang syne, we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet.”

Did you know?

……..that a raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top.

Did you know?

……..to many Americans, the ball dropping at Times Square in New York City signals the start of the new year in this country. The ball was first dropped in 1908.

Did you know?

…….Noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve are believed to have originated in ancient times when noise and fire were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring good luck. The Chinese are credited with inventing fireworks and use them to spectacular effect in their New Years Celebration.

Did you know?

…….A traditional southern New Year’s dish is Hoppin’ John—black eyed peas and ham hocks. An old saying goes, “Eat peas on New Year’s day to have plenty of everything the rest of the year.”

Did you know?

…….The tradition of making of New Year’s resolutions dates back to the early Babylonians. Popular modern resolutions usually include the promise to lose weight or quit smoking. The early Babylonian’s most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment.

Did you know?

The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In that year, members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers.  It celebrated the ripening of the orange crop in California.

Although the Rose Bowl football game was first played as a part of the Tournament of Roses in 1902, it was replaced by Roman chariot races the following year. In 1916, the football game returned as the sports centerpiece of the festival.

Happy 2010

I enjoy looking at YouTube videos.  Sometimes it is just for fun, but sometimes its gives me good ideas for topics to write about.

Yesterday, One of Clay Aiken’s talented fans, LovesClaysVoice, put together a video that I thought you might enjoy.  I got excited just watching and thinking of 2010.

Then, I went over to YouTube and found a video of Clay that has more than a million hits.

I thought I would put both videos up today.  One is the beginning of of Clay’s musical career and the other is a new beginning!!  I hope you enjoy them both!

Clay Aiken In The News

By musicfan123 · Comments 5915(13)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2009%2F08%2F15%2Fclay-aiken-in-the-news-2%2FClay+Aiken+In+The+News2009-08-15+07%3A09%3A48musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D5915
Saturday, August 15th, 2009

It’s been six days since the news of Clay Aiken’s new recording contract was announced.  From The Official Fan Club, we learned that Clay had signed with Decca Records which is part of Universal Music Group.

For the past two months, the gossip/news/blog sites have been somewhat quiet about Clay news.  But, with this announcement, there have been many sites that have announced the story, using their own slant on the story.  Some sites use good pictures and others find the worst.  Most spin the story to fit their preconceived opinions of Clay and his music….good or bad.

BroadwayWorld.com had a great review.  I like this paragraph of the story. They said:

Clay Aiken became a music superstar following his success on the “American Idol” television series, and has sold more than six million albums; co-authored a best-selling book; and, played six sold-out concert tours. Aiken released his fourth album, On My Way Here, on May 6, 2008. This was his first album of original songs since his 2003 chart topping, double platinum debut Measure of a Man. On My Way Here’s debut in Billboard Magazine’s Top 5 continued his streak of all four of his albums having debuted in the Top 5.

Playbill also reported on the story. One paragraph stated:

Aiken, who was bested by Ruben Studdard during the second season of “American Idol”,  has gone on to sell more than six million albums, co-author a best selling book (“Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life”) and play six sold-out concert tours. He was a focus of the short-lived Off-Broadway musical Idol: The Musical and has appeared on “Ed,” “Saturday Night Live” and “Scrubs.”

MJSBIGIDOLBLOG said in the last paragraph:

Clay Aiken and 19 Recordings (the American Idol label that signs those Idols they choose) could not reach an agreement for a new contract and decided to part ways earlier this year. This was a smart move for Clay. 19E is a terrible company and Clay is well rid of them.

Lalate published a great picture and said:

Decca has several divisions.  In recent years, Decca dominated in classical and Broadway Scores.  But in recent years Decca moved into pop.  Currently Universal operates Decca Label Group for US acts….

The Examiner sparked a mini-war when they included a poll with their article.  It’s too bad that the fans of the different Idols get so worked up over these polls.

Living In Turnaround has a wonderful article by a talented writer who started the article by saying:

Six and a half years after hitting the public spotlight, Clay Aiken is moving to a higher level, both in his professional career and in his work as an advocate for children.

With this signing, Clay has moved on from the second largest music group, Sony Music Entertainment, to the world’s leader, Universal Music Group, clearly a sign of UMG’s faith in Clay’s talent and potential to create premiere music.

The following are some of the other articles that you might want to read.

Clay Aiken Officially Signed to Decca Records at ACESHOWBIZ

Clay Aiken Signs With Decca Records at Rickey.org

Idol Watch/Clay Aiken Signs Record Deal With Decca at miamiherald

If you visit Google, you will find more articles and in the coming weeks there will be even more.  Let us hope that the writers do their homework and present accurate articles about Clay and his musical career.

Have a good “READ!”

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
