Are you a fan of Clay Aiken?  Do you want to know why you should seriously consider becoming an active member of FaceBook, Twitter, and YouTube…why it is important that you read and comment at blogs and articles about Clay?  If you read the following information, I hope you will see why it is paramount that we all participate in the social/digital world of a musician.

On July 20th, Big Champagne unveiled The Ultimate Chart at the New Music Seminar in New York City.

The purpose of the Ultimate Chart is to update old methods that were used to track the popularity of songs and artists. For years, Billboard charts have ranked musicians by sales only. The Ultimate Chart uses everything from Amazon downloads and YouTube/Vevo views to Facebook fans and Twitter followers to provide the music industry a chart for the digital age.

Eric Garland, the CEO of Big Champagne said:

“For the first time this is getting beyond but not leaving behind traditional sales and airplay. What we’ve tried to do is take everything we know about the ways in which artists and their fans connect and put that into one measure, so that we really know where we stand.”

Big Champagne’s partners and sources for the Ultimate Chart include retailers, online and traditional broadcasters (radio and television), major content companies, subscription services, social networks and other venues where fans demonstrate their passion for music. These include: Yahoo! Music, Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, VEVO, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, MTV, ClearChannel, MediaBase, AOL, Napster, Microsoft Zune, We Are Hunted, LastFM and many more.

Data provided by Big Champagne is being used by major music companies to make decisions about signing artists and promoting music online and to radio stations.   Broadcasters use Big Champagne to help determine the list of songs performed on commercial radio and music television.

Tamara Conniff is the Founder/Editor of The Comet and a former Billboard Editor-in-Chief and Associate Publisher.  She is a huge fan of the Ultimate Chart:

“This chart is long overdue and represents for the first time an
accurate view of where popular music is today. Music is not just about sales, it’s about interaction—listening, watching, playlisting, evangelizing and socializing. The Comet will be publishing the Ultimate Chart and using Big Champagne’s data for analysis, prediction, and consumer trends.”

The following chart is an example of how Big Champagne comes up with their figures.  It does seem like a more concise way of measuring celebrity relevance in the entertainment field.

The Ultimate chart is the up and coming way to compare the relevancy of stars.  It is being posted at many of the top music webpages.

I thought a chart that compares some FaceBook and Twitter numbers would help to see the big picture.  The Facebook column is the number of friends and the twitter column is the number of people following the singer.

I have read on many of the Clay Aiken boards that many of his fans are a bit afraid of FaceBook and Twitter.  Well, I think it is time for each of us to get signed up and get counted for supporting Clay.  It doesn’t cost anything and if you are afraid of privacy issues, sign up as whatever name you want and don’t add any information you don’t want to.  And, use it only to support Clay.

If there are those who don’t know how to use the sites, lets set up a “Twitter for Dummies” site and another for FaceBook.  Perhaps someone can host a thread at each board.  AND, if all else fails, send me a message and I will set up something here.

Do you have any suggestions??  Is this something we can work on as a huge group?  If you believe that this information is important, please pass the word around.  Post the chart, copy some of the important facts or, if you have permission, leave a link.  I never ask this, but today, I feel this information should be shared.

Clay Aiken – “Definitely Worthy!”

By musicfan123 · Comments 10141(16)http%3A%2F%2Fclaynewsnetwork.com%2F2010%2F12%2F27%2Fclay-aiken-definitely-worthy%2FClay+Aiken+-+%22Definitely+Worthy%21%222010-12-27+08%3A11%3A25musicfan123http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claynewsnetwork.com%2F%3Fp%3D10141

What a big surprise to hear from Clay Aiken on Sunday.  His blog about radio airplay was interesting and made me excited for the future.

I have been a Clay fan since his appearance on American Idol.  In all that time, I do not remember Clay ever asking for help in getting spins.  This tells me a lot.  To me, it means that Clay and his team have been doing their homework and see that things might have changed and there is a possibility for a bit of radio play.

It has been fun reading the responses from Clay’s fans.  The majority of the fans are ready and willing to do what they can to support Clay and his music.  I mean, isn’t that what fans are supposed to do?

I have also found myself shaking my head at a few responses.  Someone posted that it was a sorry state that Clay had to do his own PR.  Where was Decca??  Well, I bet Decca is right there, studying the responses and info that major record companies receive each week.  No way would Clay go off on his own…come on!!

So many fans still feel the burn of requesting but getting nothing but negative responses.  However, if you look at the big picture we realize that it is a different time, a different record label, and to some extent, a new Clay.  Times have changed and each one of us needs to take a few minutes and help Clay.  I have a few minutes to help Clay.  Do you??  It might even work!!

Clay mentioned in his blog that:

“we’re gonna throw ourselves into Adult Contemporary formats throughout the country.”

You all may be more informed about the radio than I, but I felt the necessity to find out more about radio formats and  “Adult Contemporary Formats.”

At Radio Station World, I learned that:

A radio format, or programming format, or programming genre refers to the overall content broadcasting over a radio station. Some stations broadcast multiple genres on set schedule. Over the years, formats have evolved and new ones have been introduced. In today’s age of radio, many radio formats are designed to reach a specifically defined segment or niche of the listening population based on such demographic criteria as age, ethnicity, background, etc.

OK…that makes sense!

According to the Encyclopedia of Radio, Vol 2, radio formats developed in response to the competitive threat posed by television and the growing number of competing radio stations. For years and years, radio stations had been a mass medium. Each outlet was trying to be all things to all people. But as television grew in popularity and as more television and radio stations went on the air, audience fragmentation occurred.  This prompted radio programmers to seek ways to differentiate their programming and attract audiences.

But, what is Adult Contemporary?  Sometimes referred as “AC”, Adult Contemporary music station are aimed at people 30 years and older.  These stations primarily play popular and rock music released during the past fifteen or twenty years.  It is designed for listeners who are not interested in hearing current releases.  Don’t go to Adult Contemporary if you want to hear “Rap”.

Knowing very little legitimate information about radio formats and radio play, I looked up Radio – Locator. This great site had some interesting information on radio stations.

Well, this certainly looks like a good place to start!    I also found out that the following stations are leaders in Adult Contemporary:

KOIT 96.5 FM    San Francisco, CA Holiday (Adult Contemporary)

KOST 103.5 FM   Los Angeles, CA Holiday (Adult Contemporary)

WYXB 105.7 FM   Indianapolis, IN Holiday (Adult Contemporary)

WLTW 106.7 FM   New York City        Holiday (Adult Contemporary)

KVIL 103.7 FM      Dallas, TX              Adult Contemporary

It is only a start.  I wonder how many stations need to be contacted?  Next, I need to do some research on Clear Channel, Delilah, etc. I have read chatter about these entities, but I would be the first to admit that what I know at this time is rumor, not fact.  I better get to work!!

Meantime, each one of us needs to step up and help.  No excuses…. it doesn’t cost anything but a few minutes and I can’t think of any legitimate reason why a Clay Aiken fan would not stand up and be counted in this project.  According to Clay:

Feel free to request wherever you like, whenever you like. The worst they can do is not play it. (Which is exactly what they will do if we don’t go for it) But this album and that song are definitely worthy of and right up the alley of AC stations.

Congratulations to Clay Aiken. He rated the number 1 position on the mainstream AC charts at Promosquad’s HitPredictors.  The results that were just recently published show that Clay was in the top position for the months of November, December and January.

According to the HitPredictor site, the chart is a gauge of an artist’s popularity, above and beyond the song charts.  Every aspect of the artist’s career is a part of the score. Chart performance is impacted by many different things, including marketing, airplay, TV appearances, the Internet and even rumors.

HitPredictor started its Internet based pre-testing in 2003 by turning to real music fans for their opinions.  A list of several hundred artists is compiled and the artists are rated by carefully screened music fans.

Songs are blind tested online by Promosquad using multiple listens and a nationwide sample of music consumers.  Songs are rated on a scale of 1-5;  final results are based on weighted positives.

Promosquad is a company that was founded on the axiom that radio is vibrant when it comes to delivering new music to the listening public.  They feel that radio still remains the biggest factor in the discovery of new music.  Tim Richards. A Clear Channel Programming VP says, “Today’s work schedule makes it more difficult to dedicate a lot of time to new music.  HitPredictor is a great tool for staying on top of music trends.”

So, in spite of the lack of radio support for Clay Aiken, he still is at the top of the charts.  Just think about the hits he would have if he had some support from the record executives who are supposed to be in his corner.

Quote of the Day

It is not always about performance art, but about receiving positive energy from people with positive spirits. Sometimes we can see someone's spirit, and those are the people with great energy. Those are the people that get me through the day, especially on Broadway. -Clay Aiken
